
In a time when virtually any electronic device can be hacked, lifesaving devices such as pacemakers are no exception. To help protect patients wearing such devices, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Massachusetts have entered into a joint venture to develop wireless “cloaks” that may be used with existing implants and may be removed during a medical emergency. The “medical shield” acts like a firewall that protects implants from unauthorized access or hacking, and may be disabled by special encrypted instructions uploaded by doctors.
