MOBI : Redefining Mobility

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 04:50 AM PST

Animesh Kumar:

With the fuel prices sky rocketing and the street congestion at its peak, it is time that we look for smart mobility options to commute for our day to day requirements. Perhaps working on better fuel efficient options could be considered. Diesel, for example, is way cheaper than the rich man’s fuel (petrol). Yet, with the diesel compatible vehicles being not so affordable for the middle class man and the street congestion problem being still unsolved, there has to be better future projects. One such project has been framed in concept by a Mumbai (India) based designer Ajinkya Yadav. He has named it as MOBI.

His sole motive for the project is to serve against the problem of street congestion and rising fuel prices. This project, requires companies holding expertise in the sectors such as Operating system developers, Car manufacturers, networking and fuel cell solutions to come together and work towards a whole new model functionality. As an instance, he gives the following example that may describe the working of the model:

(iOS / Android) + (Honda / TATA) + Vodafone = MOBI concept

In his portfolio featuring the MOBI concept, he further explains that like a customer visits the Vodafone store for buying, say, a 24 month recharge for his cell phone/ tablet, etc. , they would visit the showrooms and decide upon a plan for buying a contract duration, the distance that they could travel and the OS that they prefer (or the supported OS that may come as a default option). This purchase will hence set up a distance allowance which could be renewed or incremented upon payments, totally out ruling the re-fueling process that we have now.

The MOBI, as viewed in the gallery, is super simplistic giving the concept model an aerodynamic (which can cater to speed requirements) and compact (which can solve the street congestion issues) design. It is a single seating vehicle concept and this could be a great solution to the several problems faced by daily work commuters. It comprises of a single rear wheel and dual front wheels giving the driver, a full control on the mobility. The single wheel at the rear end is connected to the seat in order to provide the driver unmatched ergonomics while the vehicle and the seat can easily change size and postures as per the requirements. The vehicle will be connected to a tabled (operated by an OS) which can work as a UI. The driver can use a mobile app for the vehicle to know about information such as the distance left under his allowance, account details, recharge options, etc.

The best feature about this concept is that the person can save his vehicle adjustment settings on a card and this card, when inserted in any hired MOBI, processes the same information to adjust the vehicle as per the saved setting. The project. as foreseen by Ajinkya could be in a position to go live approximately by 2030.

Scope Information Kiosk to help Melbourne’s homeless regain their self-esteem

Asmita Prasad:

Homelessness is a major civic problem around the world; though in a developed country, the problem exaggerates itself and marks a more gloomy threat to the society which prides itself in the trappings of economic privilege and financial success. In a world increasingly under duress by a weakened economy, homelessness can be a major indicator of social and governmental failure. Being forced to live on the streets is an exceptionally traumatic experience and the homeless have to struggle with not only fighting the elements and finding food, but also finding the strength in themselves to redeem their self esteem. With the number of recorded homeless people growing in number in the Australian capital by the year, Melbourne-based designer Jessica Cassar decided to come up with a way to help the socially destitute without scuffing up their self-esteem further.

Since asking for help, food, or information in a disheveled state can be a traumatic experience, the Scope Information Kiosk could be the perfect transitional source of information for the homeless who can use the kiosk to not only use a clean toilet, but also get information regarding nearby help centers, shelters, the schedule of food vans for an areas, etc.

Since most homeless people are prone to social withdrawal, the Scope Information Kiosk can provide them with the security of being able to access public information without having to encounter staff at a public library or an internet café. The Scope Information Kiosk thus becomes a safe haven for homeless people with low self esteem and they can begin the process of regaining control of their lives by procuring information about places and agencies that can help them make a fresh start.

The Scope Information Kiosk's primary goal is to offer the homeless with a free-of-cost and sanitary toilet so that they don't have to feel the humiliation of facing the staff at a public restroom. The secondary goal of the kiosk is to offer the homeless with a free self-help center that contains information about food vans so that they don't have to worry about there their next meal is coming from. But most importantly, the Scope Information Kiosk serves as a private sanctuary for the homeless where they can access information about aid agencies, rehab centers and support networks. Since most people living on the streets have a natural suspicion of others, the kiosk provides them with a sense of safety since they are not required to interact with others in real-time.

Made from recycled shipping containers, the Scope Information Kiosk comes with a small bathroom lined with recycled tiles with cork flooring that requires minimum maintenance. Double glazed reinforced glass and metal grating ensures that the computers and furnishings inside the kiosk are not stolen and the bijou floor space ensures that the homeless do not end up using the shelters as a living space.

eQo campaign promises to cleanup the air as you pedal

Asmita Prasad:

In order to achieve clean air goals over the next five decades, communities around the globe would need to come together and take bold steps towards reducing emissions via consciously limiting the use of automobiles and using greener modes of transportation like bicycles. However, it may not be enough to simply switch from a car/taxi to a bicycle to reverse the damage that carbon emissions have caused since the dawn of the industrial era. To renew and cleanse the air around the world, a large-scale air purification system would be required. The eQo Urban Air Renewal Campaign devised by Canadian designer Anthony Chimbuya takes on the challenge via a dual action modus operandi which involves education with tangible progress and utilizes public involvement by uniting the process of air cleaning with something as simple as cycling.

Through education and participation, the campaign aims at improving air quality within urban locales by encouraging bikers to attach eQo to their bicycles. Though the portable plant potter wouldn't actively filter the air as the biker pedals through a neighborhood, it will however, allow people to reconnect with nature in a way that has been near impossible for people who grew up in big cities. The users thus learn bonds with the plant as a living being, and when the plant is big enough, it can be transferred to a backyard, a park, or even a bigger planter to cleanse the air within a community. The idea behind the eQo Urban Air Renewal Campaign is very basic though if it can be implemented at a large scale, it can bring about a global change in humankind's attitude about trees, plants and natural resources in general.

The potters used in the eQo Urban Air Renewal Campaign are made from recycled materials and can be fully reused after the plant they house are transferred to another location. This minimizes the creation of waste during the length of the campaign and users can also return the eQo Urban Air Renewal Pots to the purchase points after a while in exchange for a new one and can even claim a reward for contributing to the campaign. The planters can also be used as flower pots and users will be encouraged to give the planters their own creative touch and they will be free to plant anything they fancy in the portable pots-from bonsais to cacti to a patch of grass even!
