Posted: 29 Dec 2011 06:57 AM PST

Asmita Prasad:

The Lumina Beach Chair with Interactive Projector concept by Sid Bhat aims at providing beach-goers with a modular beach habitat. The design reinvents beach recreation by creating new ways of enjoying time spent by the sea by using technological advancement in an innovative way that does not adversely affect the natural environment. The projection system allows users to create 2 dimensional virtual projections of various beach activities like soccer, beach volleyball, yoga and dance that are presented in an interactive format. The design looks to remain as minimalistic as possible to ensure that the Lumina Beach Chair with Interactive Projector is not an intrusive presence at crowded beaches.

The projector area of the Lumina Beach Chair with Interactive Projector has a speaker embedded into it that allows a musical score to be played along with the activity being shown on the screen or as a background theme as well. Though the design is created to be used as a standalone projector, various other projectors in close proximity can also be linked together to create a much larger projection.

The projector proved in the Lumina Beach Chair with Interactive Projector comes with enough lumens or brightness to be able to be used during the day or even in extremely well-lit areas. The projections can be used on any surface including the surface of the sand at the beach thanks to a unique halographic laser technology. The Lumina Beach Chair with Interactive Projector also comes with an IR optical sensor that allows the user to interact with the virtual projections.

New programs, videos and audio can also be uploaded to its interface via Bluetooth technology. The use of Bluetooth allows the projector's library to be updated without removing the memory card. The versatile Lumina Beach Chair with Interactive Projector also serves as a storage option and the rear half of the chair features a storage compartment that can hold smaller items such as a wallet, watch, towels etc.

Its overall design represents an optimized sustainability and the battery that powers the chair can be easily recharged by plugging it into an electric outlet via an access port within the compartment. The lightweight design of the beach chair allows it to be easily carried over the shoulder. Since users can link the projector to their phones via Bluetooth, a separate media console is not required to play media files on it.

Jaspreet Kaur Walia:

Modern gadgets, like laptops, netbooks, tablets, mobile and smart phones, have made our lives easy. These gadgets keep us connected with the world and are a great way to communicate. The birth of SMS and IM conversations has made communication easy and quick. But, the only hitch that they come with is the failure to keep these messages on paper and cherish them later like letters or snail mail. Here to help keep the charm alive and seal memories on paper is the BlackBox, which has been designed by Joe Doucet.

BlackBox is a portable unit that plugs into one's phone or laptop and uses a standard, non-carbon receipt printing system.

BlackBox is a device that will swap electronic conversations into physical copies to make sure that memories are kept intact for years to come. Normally, people are forced to delete many conversations because of the shortage of storage space in the gadget, which erases memories attached with a particular message with the passage of time. Also, mails received are forgotten even when starred. BlackBox is a small and portable unit, which can be coupled with a phone and even a laptop.

The handy device will create instant copies and conversation records. When BlackBox is connected to an electronic gadget, it will generate two similar records by making good use of a standard, noncarbon receipt printing system. The second copy created can be shared with some other person and won't require giving away your cherished copy. It will print records of every conversation, irrespective of its length. The device is much better than using a printer. So, keep memories intact and embrace special conversations with the portable BlackBox.

Floating ‘sea tree’ to protect flora and fauna both above and under water

Jaspreet Kaur Walia:

The concept

Wasterstudio.nl is a company based in Amsterdam that has designed a floating habitat called the Sea Tree. This habitat promises to unfurl a secure sanctuary, both underwater and above the water surface, for both flora and fauna. The need of a concept like Sea Tree arises because of climatic change and rapid urbanization. These pose a threat toward plant and animal habitats, and this floating structure will help protect it and put forward positive environment advantages. The additional habitat will be for birds, bees, bats and other small animals and is unfit for human use.

The inspiration

The only thing that stirred Waterstudio.nl to create Sea Tree was to protect natural habitats in cities that are at a risk of diminishing because of urbanization. The company anticipates that these eco friendly structures will be purchased by large companies, which will later donate them to cities. This will show their concern for the environment and in turn also help protect natural habitats in urban areas.

Eco credentials

Sea Tree is a space saving design that is 100% self sufficient. It will support a variety of flora and fauna, helping in their growth. It won't consume any space on land and will be built on water bodies and harbors. The height and depth of the natural habitat can be tweaked as per the location. It will be crafted by making good use of offshore technology, which is almost similar to the oil storage towers spotted in open seas. It will provide a safe haven for small animals above the surface of water and support small water creatures underwater. The structure is tied up to the bottom of the water floor. It can also move a bit with the waves and wind.

Feasibility

The floating habitat is a feasible idea and will become a safe haven for flora and fauna. The best part being, it won't eat up precious space on land and utilize harbors and water bodies. The structure has been ingeniously designed, which makes sure that human entry is not allowed. The narrow and steep sides will discourage human entry, making sure that animals are not disturbed.

Asmita Prasad:

The PRISMA Individual electric vehicle by André Batista is a brand new concept that gives all-terrain transroading a whole new meaning. Designed for single transport, the electric vehicle concept is based around the idea of improving the personal space available to the single passenger. The vehicle also offers improved driving flexibility by offering drivers the choice between using the vehicle as a car, a boat and as a personal helicopter. Yes, you read that right, a helicopter!

An Individual electric vehicle designed for single transport

Through the boat-car and the car-chopper concepts have been done to death before, we’ve frankly never encountered a concept that also incorporates a helicopter within the same vehicle design as a boat.

The designer proposes to build the chassis of the vehicle with painted carbon fiber to decrease the overall weight of the design. The vehicle will be propelled via two motors one of which be used to power the rotor on top and the other will power the rear wheels of the vehicle.

The motor installed in the rotor will also be fitted with regenerative braking capabilities to make the vehicle as sustainable as possible. To offer a full panoramic view of the surrounding space, the vehicle will feature an acrylic coverage which will also be used as an electric door. On a full charge, the vehicle will be able to travel for up to 4 hours in helicopter mode, 80 kms in boat mode and 220 km in car mode.

China debates over the launch of world's fastest bullet train

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 08:06 PM PST

Jaspreet Kaur Walia:

Design inspirations can be drawn from any vague objects, even if it may be a sword design. All you need is the presence of a creative mind and you would be rearing to go. China has been credited with creating some of the best transport designs for their trains and buses. Recently, the Chinese economy has been blessed with the launch of the world's fastest bullet train.

China's Super- Speed Train
China unveils new super-speed train that can hit 300mph

Zooming around at a neck wrenching speed of 300 kilometers per hour, the train traveled between Wuhan Railway Station and Guangzhou North Railway Station and was able to complete its journey in a flat time of 3 hours. If seen otherwise, the normal journey would have taken at least a standard 10.5 hours.

Just imagine, if anyone would be sitting inside, there would hardly be any visual treats as the train is traveling at such a fast pace. The train is truly talking with the wind when it comes to traveling and commuting to and fro between the set destinations.

The train was unveiled and tested by a 600-member delegation that killed two birds with one stone. They not only managed to promote tourism in Guangzhou, but also checked out the new train service. As some people refrain from using the trains for commuting purposes, this train would prove to be an exception. The Government has stepped in to ensure that a cleaner, safer and more sophisticated service is provided to every commuter.

The transgression of time has taken almost 9 years to reach the 300 kilometer per hour mark. It was not an easy journey as per engineer, Xu Fangliang. Xu has brought the Wuhan-Guangzhou line into the limelight and is hopeful that the oncoming years would see more than just speed when it comes to traveling from Beijing to other major capitals in China.

As per the Chinese government, by 2015, the economy would be uplifted and revolutionized by the building of 42 high speed trains, networking all over China. Once the large network of trains is in place, there would be absolutely nothing to stop China from being one amongst the best in terms of transport.

As it is known, with great power comes great responsibility. Similarly, there has been a bit of unrest attached with the launch of the fastest bullet train. But, increasing number of train accidents in the past few months is deterring passengers from welcoming the speedy transport utility with open arms. As answers are being searched for uprising questions, it is to be seen if the world's fastest train would get to travel at its designated 350 kilometers per hour speed or would the sword shaped train remain sheeted forever.

The Qibla is significant in the performance of various ceremonies like halal (slaughtering of animals) and even burials. Most mosques feature a mihrab or a wall niche that indicate the Qibla and most Muslim households also have their own markers for indication of the sacred direction. Being able to locate the direction of the Qibla can be especially perilous when one is out camping, which poses a huge problem for practicing Muslims.

The camp light comes with a build in Qibla Indicator which allows campers to easily locate the sacred direction. The lamp provides sufficient illumination for most camping activities and even comes with a bijou storage space for storing small objects. The ergonomic design of the lamp allows it to be packed in a backpack with ease. The durable construction of the design allows it to survive the rigors of the outdoor life.
