A Room for London: A perched hut for two guests over the Thames Posted: 10 Jan 2012 03:25 AM PST Abdul Vahid V: ‘A Room for London’ is an exclusive hanging hotel for two guests over the Thames River in London. It is a one-unit hotel that can house two people a night and it will be open only for a year. The awesome hotel is a project of Artangel and Living Architecture, and it is designed by David Kohn Architects with artist Fiona Banner. The inspiration for the river boat-shaped hotel is the steamer Joseph Conrad mentioned in his novella ‘Heart of Darkness’. Living Room for London
Picture Gallery Living Room for London is a project of Artangel The hovering hotel will be a great experience for people to spend a night. They can enjoy the nocturnal beauty and grandeur of the Thames, look at the clouds and have a glimpse of the sleeping city. The exterior of the small hotel is pretty superb with the shape of a riverboat and bedecked with glass windows. It seems to have designed to let enough air and light enter the rooms inside. Living Architecture has not released images of the interior of the hotel. However, let us simply guess that it will have an en-suite double bedroom, a viewing deck, a kitchen, a bathroom and, of course, a library inside. The press release from its developers invites visitors to reflect upon what they experience during their one night stay in the hovering hut. The price for a stay in the hotel starts at £120 ($185). It will not be a big price for Londoners. Enjoy the pleasure of spending a night over the Thames in A Room for London. Via: Fastcodesign |

EYE experience capture system captures extreme sports moments with ease Posted: 10 Jan 2012 02:47 AM PST Asmita Prasad: Capturing moments in extreme sports and providing a first-person perspective in such activities is one of the most difficult tasks today. Though the technology to make this possible currently exists, wearable cameras on offer in the market at the moment are bulky and heavy and limit the range of the wearer's movements. The EYE experience capture system by designer Nickolas Ovvadias looks to eliminate some of the limitations that the current lot of wearable cameras come with and provides a hands-free image capture experience even in the most unusual circumstances.
Eye
The 'eye' wearable digital device is essentially a hands-free camera that can capture everyday images in a very intuitive way. The easy-to-use camera lets user capture everyday experiences and random moments. The camera allows the 'eye' to create a sequence of images and sounds together which allows these visual and auditory cues to recreate the captured moments more vividly for viewers. The rechargeable battery-run ‘eye’ can be programmed to take photos at random moments with the frequency of the shutter clicks being specified by the user in advance. The fish eye lens used in the device lets the camera capture panoramic views. Each shot thus provides a full first person perspective of the experience making it a handy tool for situations where taking pictures using a handheld device would be impossible. When the 'eye' snaps a picture, a 6-second-long sound sample is also recorded at the alongside to offer a more real-to-life experience for viewers. The device can be synced with a smartphone or even connected to a computer via wireless Bluetooth to manipulate the image capture and sound recording settings. Once shot, every set of images can be saved in a single file and archived or shared with friends over social media platforms. The device can be used in many ways - the user can wear it as necklace or clip to their backpacks, bags or clothes to get different perspectives for their images. When the device is worn around the neck, it can be preset to capture a certain number of pictures per hour. The user can also take instant, single pictures with the device like a handheld camera by pushing of the right shutter release button. The users can also attach the 'eye' to their clothes to capture picture while in motion. It can be extremely useful for adventure sports enthusiasts and extreme sportsperson who otherwise need to have a dedicated camera crew follow them around or need to wear bulky and heavy cameras on their person to capture images in extreme conditions. X-Halo: Predicting asthma in a manner that takes your breath away Posted: 10 Jan 2012 02:14 AM PST Brown Bear: This year’s President’s design award in Singapore was handed over to X-Halo, a breath thermometer that has been brought into the market by the Philips Design Team. Being touted as a revolutionary tool in combating asthma, X-Halo is extremely intuitive, easy and fun to use. Many research studies have shown a positive correlation between blocked airways and the breath temperature. The greater the airways get inflamed, the warmer or hotter the breath is. This correlation has been medically used to determine the onset and intensity of asthma in the X-Halo. This is a boon for asthmatics who have never been able to predict an attack or even recognize that they are patients till they actually experience symptoms that affect daily life.
X-halo Breath Thermometer
Picture Gallery X-halo Breath Thermometer by Delmedica Investments Pte Ltd Delmedica Investments, who offers investors and patients alike with the immense potential that the global biotechnology industry holds, has introduced the X-Halo breath thermometer to help manage asthma by accurately measuring the breath temperature in a non invasive and user friendly way. The endeavor has been to make the testing intriguing and fun for the patient and diagnostically easy for the doctor. The result is a compact ‘can’ that has a nozzle that can be flipped open. This breath nozzle glows green as an indicator for the patient to start exhaling. Audio indicators and LED lights signal the patient to stop blowing. Thus, it is very intuitive and easy to use for the patients. The device can take up to 250 readings with all necessary parameters and details. These can then be downloaded on to the PC via a cable. The data can be processed into meaningful information that helps the doctor predict the onset of an asthmatic attack. It also makes it possible to prescribe the necessary medication and treatment to avoid the same. Thus, it is a boon for the doctors and physicians. The Philips High Design Methodology has been applied in the manufacture of these handheld X-Halo devices. A lot of research and understanding have thus resulted in an imaginative and feasible solution that X-Halo is. The key consideration in the design is to create a user friendly experience and offer an easy diagnosis. The advantages and usefulness of X-Halo is not restricted to asthma alone. Working on the same premise of inflamed airways causing rise in breath temperature, it can also be used to help the diagnosis of a host of other lung problems and diseases. 2000 beta prototypes have been launched and tests are on to see the usefulness of X-Halo in predicting respiratory conditions like SARS and H1N1. By creating a harmonious relationship between people, objects and environment (natural and man-made), Philips has definitely delivered great value via the X-Halo. The freedom and empowerment inherent in the ability to predict an asthma attack is bound to delight many hearts. Via: DesignSingapore |

One among such inventions is Logitech® Cube. Logitech has introduced its new range of mice, Logitech® Cube in this very month of January, 2012 up for sale. The unique design, easy to handle and a complete official package is all what the wireless Logitech cube holds in its features. The appearance is similar to a match box due to its tiny cube form but with a shiny and glossy touch added to it. The shape is so very unique that now working with mice will all be the play of one’s fingers. It also acts as a presenter where it can present your PowerPoint presentations by simply up-holding the cube slightly from the desk, in the air. As the mouse detects its posture, it automatically turns into the presenter mode and will smoothly assist you in your conferences. All this is due to laser technique and touch sensors used in it.
Logitech Cube The Cube also accompanies the tiny Logitech Unifying receiver with it. The receiver features the Logitech Advanced 2.4 GHz connectivity and its tiny form factor that keeps plugged into your laptops/PCs comfortably. It also gives you the opportunity to connect six compatible devices like a keyboard, number pad or another mouse with no more requirements of multiple USB receivers; keeping your ports free. Thus, its small form factor provides the user with wireless convenience as he can move with his laptop to any place without the hassle of cords.
Picture Gallery It’s called the Cube, and though it looks a bit more like a rectangular prism The Cube is a work cum personal geeky tool as it can be easily fitted into the user's pocket and can be used at any time and at any place when the need arises. Moreover, it has an On/Off switch button on to its front that will help you with saving the power and necessity to use according to its time of use. The Cube also comes with a pre-installed AA lithium rechargeable battery, USB charging cord, a pouch and the user documentation along with it. The smoother screen movement just adds the perfection to its use, as it can glide smoothly to go on to next slide or swipe your fingers on the main panel to move up and down the page. All this is thankfully done because of Logitech's Flow Scroll software that gives you the experience similar to your touchscreen Smartphones. Seriously amazing, isn't it? The Cube has already been named an International CES Innovations 2012 Design & Engineering Awards Honoree in the category of computer peripherals product. It will also be featuring in the Innovation Design and Engineering Showcase at the 2012 International CES that will be running on Jan. 10-13, 2102 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
