Powerful and efficient wind power mill with minimal noise Posted: 20 Apr 2012 06:03 AM PDT Radhicka S Saxena: Most remote and rural areas do not have an adequate grid network for electric supply. Also, most of the traditional systems designed for power generation require fuel for their operations. But, delivering fuels to such areas is not easy. Keeping these constraints in mind, a self sufficient wind mill system has been devised. This wind mill is designed for remote areas that do not have access to an appropriate power supply system.
Power station The new design is a lot more efficient than the usual wind mill setups. Maximum energy can be derived out of the wind flow by this device. The basic layout consists of a set of blades placed on top of vertical shaft. Characteristics like weight and size are reduced in this arrangement. This design is definitely much better than the regular horizontal axis wind turbines. Its efficiency as compared to horizontal installation increases by nearly 85 percent. The wind power plant boasts of many other useful features. The kinematics of its blades are autonomous and it can easily rotate by a whole 360 degrees around its axis. The angle of attack of each blade can be set automatically. The design has a provision for rough conditions like storms, hurricanes and gusty winds also. The blades are enabled with an instant auto feathering feature to face such climatic conditions. Moreover, you don't have to wait for really powerful winds to blow if you want this windmill to start functioning. The initial torque is generated at very low wind speeds. Also, the unit does not generate much noise. Any infrasonic noise is totally absent and even in the audible range the noise created is extremely low. Via: James Dyson Award |
The faucet which ‘flows’ of luxury and style Posted: 20 Apr 2012 06:02 AM PDT Shallu Sharma: The restroom has its name for a reason. An ideal one should sport of comfort, luxury and a built to please the eye. It's a place where you are entirely you with all guards down. The solitude presents an opportunity to appreciate the material beauty around. It would bode well to build a bathroom with eclectic components, which together would give parturition to an imperial chamber. Speaking of components, faucets are perhaps the most regularly utilized washroom implements. Over here, we appreciate a modish and contemporary looking faucet which is much more than meets the eye as regards its form inspiration.
Faucet
Design-wise, the faucet is "pro-hydro" in that it derives its design from water and the outgrowths which thrive on natural water. Quoting one such instance, the twisted Mangroves, woody in form and creeping above the shrubs to seek sunlight while their roots remain submerged. Hence it is evident from the ultimate design that the prime emphasis of the design scheme remains to depict the link that is "plant-water." Even the manner of delivery of water from the faucet has been given meticulous attention with a handle delivery front which furnishes water as if "magically" on being pulled forth. Arriving at the mechanistic and utilitarian aspects of the faucet, the upper front is equipped with a crisp display which fetches in machine-like precision when it comes to mixing waters hot and cold. The display indicates the temperature of running water in a cool blue hue, which again portrays the "watery influence" on the design. |
Trace solar lamp soaks energy during the day to light up at night Posted: 20 Apr 2012 05:59 AM PDT Radhicka S Saxena: The beautiful floral shaped lamp is absolutely an eye candy. The splashes of muted tones on its shade look fashionable yet earthy. The umbrella shaped awning holds cool tints like sea green and watery blue. The gorgeous piece is a creation of two Eindhoven based designers, Mike Thompson and Gionata Gatto. The stunning piece was displayed at the exhibition Spazio Rossana Orlandi organized at Milan design Week 2012.
Trace solar lamp
The solar powered piece is a self sufficient lighting unit. It collects solar energy during the day and then oozes light at night. Its shape is really thoughtful and practical. Moreover, the piece has been constructed using polyurethane rubber. The new design allows for a greater control over the photoluminescent pigments and also enhances their concentration. The designs available in this collection have been dubbed as "Trace" series. The working of the lamp is brilliant. Just charge the piece for roughly 30 minutes and it will provide light for several hours. The smaller lamps called "trace S" work on a combination of electric and solar power. The larger variation dubbed as "trace M" is even more proficient and can replace the light bulb. After soaking in sunlight, this lamp radiates an ambient glow. The lamp has a larger surface area that is used to charge it up. Via: Design Boom |

RECG Watch can keep time and monitor your heart rate too Posted: 20 Apr 2012 05:58 AM PDT Asmita Prasad: There are watch design concepts and then there are some more. But the RECG Watch concept by UK-based designer identified only as Peter (who submitted this design to Tokyo flash) is something rather unique. The watch is inspired by Rotational Electrocardiogram which is basically the regular ECG only in circular form rather than the linear one found in hospitals. The RECG Watch gives time telling a rather unique twist.
RECG Watch Design
The watch face features glass arrow shaped cutouts on the discs that have replaced the hands though the watch functions basically like a regular analogue watch. The hours are displayed by the inward facing arrow and the minutes are displayed by the outward facing arrow and time is displayed in the same manner as it is on a regular watch. To give the ECG effect, the watch features a ring shaped LED array that moves in a circular motion and the pulsing motion gives the watch a rather unique functioning. What's even better is that the watch can also be made to serve as a real heart rate monitor as well that can be great for both fitness freaks as well as people who need to keep an eye on their pulse rate and do not want to be hooked to a stationary machine the whole day long. Steampunk Grand iPhone Victrola is one cool mother of an amp Posted: 20 Apr 2012 05:58 AM PDT Asmita Prasad: There are steampunk amps and then there are some more. But few can beat this awesome steampunk Grand iPhone Victrola created by NYC-based artist Will Rockwell who specializes in creating steampunk inspired items. The iPhone speaker is definitely not petite by any stretch of the imagination and is created using an authentic antique brass gramophone bell as well as a whole host of copper, brass and wooden bits.
iPhone Victrola
The passive device comes with a special slot for the iPhone where users can slip their device in and have their choice of music amplified by 12 decibels. Sporting a 17 inch diameter bell, the Steampunk Grand iPhone Victrola measures 22 inches long and 24 inches high and takes up considerable space on a countertop or table though it is really, really sturdy and can in theory withstand falling off from a height. The Steampunk Grand iPhone Victrola simulates the sound produced by gramophones of yore and audio recordings more than a 100 year old is the perfect kind of music for this device. The Steampunk Grand iPhone Victrola is personally signed and dated by its maker Will Rockwell that makes it a really authentic purchase worthy of the $1,200 price tag that it sports. Via: Walyou |
iPhone 4S brags about its toughest screen protector ever Posted: 20 Apr 2012 05:57 AM PDT Radhicka S Saxena: If you have sporty and active kids back home or you are simply accident prone, then you should take a look at what the screen of the all new iPhone 4S can do. Even when lady luck is not on your side, this phone will be there to save the day. You can boldly challenge your little brat at home to thump his baseball bat smack on the screen. Any kiddo can fling the phone as many times against the wall and it will still look spanking new. Also, no matter how many times the phone slips out of your hand and falls on the floor, it will still look the same.
iPhone Screen Protector
iPhone Screen ProtectorUltra tough screen protector shields iPhones from hammer smashes This is really possible because the screen protector of this phone is as tough as they get. The secret behind this strength are the premium silicon adhesives used and also the brilliant engineering that went into this piece designed by Sir Jonathan Ive. The screen has four different shock absorbing layers. All four layers deliver a different purpose and collectively make the phone extremely rugged. One layer is capable of absorbing absolutely any shock on its screen. While, the next can actually disperses this shock. The other two layers assure that the shock proof layers stay put in their place. The screen is also scratch resistant and dust proof. In fact, the same screen protector has been used on an iPad also. So, if you are looking for a really tough iPad, then you have found it. Now, there will be no need to hide your precious and swanky iPhone inside a cover. Flash it around as much as you like. This rough and touch screen retails for around $20 to $30. But, sadly, it is available only in Asia and not in U.S. However, buyers in U.S. who desire the piece have not been left out altogether. They can order this piece from eBay. Via: Dvice |
Urinal that lets your creative manforce find canvas Posted: 20 Apr 2012 03:22 AM PDT Asmita Prasad: Almost everyone on the face of the earth like to use their alone time while, er, relieving themselves, to do some serious thinking. Though magazines have been a popular source of entertainment for anyone sitting on the loo, people visiting public urinals find it hard to kill the few minutes it takes to empty their bladders. That's where an interactive installation like Toink-The Urinal can come in really handy, no pun intended. The public toilet installation simulates the feeling of one drawing on a canvas with an ink and brush with the brushstrokes being shown on the screen above the urinals mimicking the motion of one's pee hitting the walls of the urinal.
Urinal
Picture Gallery Toink-The Urinal is a interactive installation for the public toilet for male user Created by designer J.C. Yeh in collaboration with Billie Tsou, the Toink takes the age old art of “drawing with piss” to sophisticated new level allowing the average male urban dweller to delight in the pastime every time they need to use a public loo. Users can choose between three interesting themes including wind, water and ink to create novel artwork using the flow of their urine over the walls of the urinal with the interactive panels mimicking the patterns on the wall directly in front of the user. It's almost a little tragic that users can't save and download their pee art to their phones cause we think that would make one heck of a killer story at first dates!

Interioricity is a smart table lamp combined with an extension chord Posted: 20 Apr 2012 03:21 AM PDT Radhicka S Saxena: Wiring systems that stay out of sight are a must for swanky homes. Cables and lines running loose around the house look chaotic and messy. Hence, most designers conceal them to give your pad a suave look. But this amazing design does the exact opposite and still manages to look neat and clean. In fact, it gives the whole wiring system a makeover and the resulting piece looks cutting edge and showy.
Interioricity
Picture Gallery Interioricity: it enables us to run our gadgets and devices that accompany us and we use cables and plugs all the time The contraption essentially consists of three cables. You can create different arrangements using these cables. A setup using only one wire can be built or you can merge two or even three of them together. When three cables are combined together at a joint, you will have created a neat tripod stand. This tripod lamp can be placed easily on any flat surface like a desk or table. Various supplies can be attached to these cables. You can fix a plug or even a light piece at the end of the cable. The plug attached can be used to charge electronic appliances like phones, laptops and tablets. While, the light connected to the cable is also very useful as it stays flexible. Unlike other light pieces that stay fixed, this lamp will throw radiance on the exact spot you need. So, whether you are reading out of a book or looking at the computer screen, the display surface will stay adequately illuminated. The lamp can be configured in different ways. This way you can give a new look to any nook or corner using the same piece. Also, you can mold it to suit your working environment. Suppose you are writing on a desk, then you can place the tripod stand with a light right above the notebook. Also, if you are leaning back on a chair and reading something, then you can suspend the light from a single cable and make it dangle right over your book. Via: Wordpress |
San Fransisco extends its city limits to the sea with the Hydramax port machine Posted: 20 Apr 2012 03:19 AM PDT Priyanky Sarmah: Hydramax is an upcoming project from the Future Cities Labs. This Port Machines project will be on display at SFMOMA till July 29. This model is considered to be a live example of a “Live model.” Actually, Live Models are models where effects of environmental forces like fog, sunlight and wind are determined through interaction with the people and the same phenomenon is going to be applied in Hydramax . The project submits a very innovative thinking on the urban waterfront post sea-level rise San Fransisco. Apart from the existing hard ends of the waterfront the project also includes the new "soft systems" that comprises of water parks, community landscaping, animals refuges and aquaponic plantations thus making it completely one of its kind. This architecture blurs the difference between buildings, scenery, infrastructures and equipments.
HYDRAMAX
The model will be made up of materials like custom printed circuit boards, cast and thermoformed acrylic, infrared sensors , Arduino based microcontrollers, shape memory alloy motors. It will be a huge urban automatic structure. With the help of thousands of sensors, this structure is expected to collect and store rainwater and fog and at the same time will modulate the flow of air, solar exposure and also the smart building systems. Apart from this, a network of infrared sensors have been included in all the four sides of the model. This network of sensors will then record the distance between the visitors visiting the gallery and its edges. Later on, the information recorded by these sensors will be used to determine the actual white feather like "fog harvesting robots" and control the brightness of embedded LEDS. One can get a very clear idea of the project by looking at its model under display. Via: Archdaily |
