Dark world-The agonizing decision to make

The agonizing decision faced by the parents of conjoined twins who share a heart... and must be separated. It is one of the most agonizing decisions any parent could have to make.

Conjoined twins Emma and Taylor Bailey, three, will die if they are not separated because too much strain is being put on their shared heart.

But the odds that even one would survive the complex operation are extremely slim.

Dilemma: Emma and Taylor Bailey share a single heart, but must be separated if they are to survive. No twins born with one heart have ever been separated successfully.

Now doctors say that time is running out for their parents to make their choice.

Emma and Taylor, who are fused from the breastbone to the belly button, have already defied experts once.

They were expected to live for only 15 minutes because it was thought that their heart would become overworked as soon as they took their first breath.

But doctors say they must be separated in the next year or two to have any chance of survival.

The girls also share a liver. For the surgery to succeed, it is likely that they will both need heart transplants and one will need a new liver.

Their American mother Mandy Bailey, 32, who lives in Arizona, said: 'There's a tiny window of time for a separation. We have to get it completely right, if we wait too long then the operation cannot go ahead.

'In the next year, life for all of us will be drastically different.

'We know we have to make difficult choices. We understand the risks. But we also understand the outcome if we don't doanything.'

She said that when the girls were born, all her husband Tor, a 34-yearold builder, had hoped for was to hear them cry just once.

'We were told they would live for minutes and then they would suffocate,' she added. 'The girls were handed to him straight away and they simultaneously inhaled and quietly cried. It was a magical sound.'

The twins' future was still uncertain when they were well enough to be discharged from hospital. They were given oxygen and medication to strengthen their lungs and have astonished doctors with their progress.

They can feed themselves and are learning to get about using a special walker.

Mrs Bailey said: 'The girls are becoming different people and developing adorable little traits. Taylor is the bossy one. 'Emma is a bit crazy, she's always pulling funny faces.' The Baileys have four other children aged 11, nine, seven and two.

Emma and Taylor have already had several smaller heart operations. One in June last year involved placing a band around Emma's aorta to reduce her blood pressure.

Seattle Children's Hospital, which is overseeing the twins' care, does not want to discuss the treatment. Mrs Bailey said: 'We realize what a great miracle it is for our daughters to be alive and happy. They are a blessing for ourfamily.'

Strange happenings-Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme

Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme

Every year in Las Nieves, Spain, people who have suffered a near death experience in the previous year get together to attend Mass in celebration of Saint Marta de Ribarteme, the Patron Saint of resurrection. But here is the twist: they turn up at Mass carrying a coffin, or being carried in a coffin. After Mass, the coffins all proceed to the top of a nearby hill with a statue of the saint. Despite the somberness of the event, people light fireworks and shopkeepers fill the streets to sell religious objects

Dark world-Shearing of the beasts

Held every year in the village of Sabucedo, Spain “La Rapa Das Bestas“, as the Spanish call it, is a 400-year-old festival where horses that are caught in the hills are rounded up and guided into an arena of sorts called the Corral of Sabucedo, where they are sheared and branded.

Last year’s festival was held on July 5 and, as you can see, it’s very very brutal. They say it is for the preservation of old traditions and customs but truly believe this “festival” should be banned. Look at what they are doing to the poor animals, they jump on them, grab them by whatever they can and try to immobilize them to cut their tales and tag them. This is medieval stuff!

Bizarre facts-Horrible tumors

Jose: the man with no face

Jose has one of the most extreme facial tumours ever seen in medical history. The 51-year-old, from Portugal, is in danger of being suffocated by it unless he undergoes drastic surgery. Unemployed, he is blind in one eye as a result of the giant weeping growth that has consumed his features; the tumour has taken over his mouth and tongue, ballooning his lips, twisting his gums and breaking his teeth off. The deep, 15cm long growth - which started as a birth mark when he was just 11 - was sparked by abnormalities in his capillaries and veins. It started to get much bigger when he hit 16 and has been expanding ever since. H e recently flew to the UK to discuss the possibility of surgery to remove part of the tumour. But because his mother was a Jehovah’s Witness, he refused any surgery because his religion means he can’t have blood transfusions. Doctors in London came up with a plan to remove parts of the growth bit by bit - without transfusion.

Huang Chuncai: 44 pound (20kg) tumor on his face

On 2008, a Chinese man named Huang Chuncai underwent surgery to remove a 20kg or 44 pound tumor on his face. The surgery was successful but due to the large size of the tumor, only a part of it was removed at that time. Just a few days ago, Huang Chuncai went into the operating room again to remove another part of that facial tumor. This time, it was a large 4.5kg (9.9lb) chunk of flesh from his face. The tumor was originally 23kg in total. This still leaves 17.5kg of facial tissue from this tumor on his face (1kg was removed in the first surgery and 4.5kg was removed in the second surgery). Huang Chuncai suffers from Neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic disorder that causes growth on nerve tissues.
