Asap Water Rescue Craft makes lifeguard’s life easier

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 05:15 AM PST

Asmita Prasad:

For charity-funded lifeguard stations, rescue and patrol vehicles like 2-stroke petrol jet skis are longer be a financially viable option with rising fuel prices. In such a scenario, a jet ski that can be charged using solar energy and present itself as a sustainable alternative gains prominence in terms of viability. Powered by a Lithium-Ion battery, the Asap Water Rescue Craft came into being from the designer's personal experiences in lifesaving training.

By precisely calculating the amount of energy required to tow a body in water and the kind of difficulties that the task requires, the Asap Water Rescue Craft allows rescuers to carry conscious and unconscious people thanks to the existing paddle boards that are integrated within the innovative product. Since most lifeguards are often under-trained or do not possess the physical strength and necessary set of skills to perform in every kind of emergency, and most lifesaving buoyancy aids currently in use across the coasts of the world are outdated, a product like Asap Water Rescue Craft become the perfect tool to help lifesavers swimmers and people enjoying the beach more optimally.

During a beach rescue, the Asap Water Rescue Craft can help lifeguards conserve their energy for important emergency procedures like CPR after the person in trouble has been brought out of the water. Also helping to reduce the time it takes for a life guard to get to the drowning person, the Asap Water Rescue Craft allows unconscious survivors to be placed on top immediately and held with their head tilted back to help lifeguards monitor their vital stats and breathing.

The craft can be operated from any holding position via a two finger remote throttle that allows the lifeguard to hold onto the survivor with one hand if necessary while driving the craft towards a primary power rescue vehicle or towards the coast. The design is meant to serve as an alternative floatation aid and the motor assisted craft can be launched immediately by one person which makes it more efficient as a rescue vehicle than a jet ski.

Creating with inputs from international competitive sport lifesavers and experts from the RNLI, the Asap Water Rescue Craft comes with sound research and extensive analysis of existing rescue equipment and the concept has undergone rigorous tests to prove its efficiency and effectiveness. Though the Asap Water Rescue Craft currently exists only as a fully functional fiberglass prototype, its maker assures investors and potential buyers that the product would be sold for half the price of a jet ski upon official launch.

Asmita Prasad:

If you thought the new iPad was the ultimate in all things tablet, think again. Though the tablet PC appears to be the pinnacle of touchscreen experience for ordinary Joes like you and me, it falls shorts on many accounts when it comes to complex illustrations and intricate designing. To allow illustrators and designers to experience the functionality and ease of a tablet, designer Max Battaglia has created the Wacom Sketcher graphical tablet. Though still a concept, the Wacom Sketcher graphical tablet offers people with special sketching needs by providing a high-tech illustration tools that comes in the form of a neat little carry-around tablet PC.

Zesto drink warmer will warm your heart (and your coffee) this winter

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 05:11 AM PST

Asmita Prasad:

With the winters right around the corner, its time once again to start browsing the markets for gizmos and appliances that would help us keep our hot cuppas warmer for longer. Though the insulated mugs have been entrusted to do the jobs for many a winters past, nobody really likes the stale tasting coffee/tea that has been sitting in a thermos for an hour or two. With the only other alternative being brewing fresh cup and drinking it before it cools down (or buying one of those Japanese inventions that recharge themselves from your PC/laptop via a USB port), it is perhaps time for us to take concepts like this Zesto Drink Warmer a little more seriously.

Zesto
Zesto

Created by designer Nelly Tackidou, the Zesto Drink Warmer uses the basics of induction to keep a mug of hot drinks warm for longer durations without using an external electricity-sucking aids. The design, which comprises of a ceramic base and a liquid-filled rubber ring, allows users to simply "dock" their mugs on the device and continue working on their PCs/laptops without having to worry about their drinks cooling down. The innovative gadget uses a basic chain reaction to retain heat and then releases it slowly back to allow a ceramic mug and the drink in it to remain warm for longer.

Picture Gallery
Zesto
Zesto by Nelly Trakidou

The Zesto drink warmer works pretty much like an ice-pack fitted drink cooler with the obvious difference between the two being that Zesto uses a solution of water and sodium acetate-a safe food grade salt ingredient. The basic logic behind this is that once this solution is heated, the supersaturated liquid starts to "store" the heat. Once removed from heat, the solution continues to emit the heat back at a slower pace which can then be transferred to the drink in the mug and thus your coffee or tea can stay hot for longer.

To use, users simply have to remove the inner, solution-filled rubber ring from the ceramic base and immerse it in boiling water for a few minutes. Then, they can simply remove it from the water and fit it inside the base and the user then has to simply place their mugs on top of the drink warmer to keep their drinks hot. Since it doesn't use any harmful chemicals, the Zesto Drink Warmer is also completely safe to use and it can be reused an infinite number of times which makes it the perfect Christmas gift for an environmentally-conscious friend.

10 most amazing amphibious vehicles for an uninterrupted ride

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 05:01 AM PST

Tejas A:

An amphibious vehicle is one, which can be used on both land as well as water. These vehicles are still under development and many of them have been released as well after years of research and testing. They have dual types of transmission that shifts from the wheels to the propellers just at the touch of a button. The wheels retract and the vehicle is transformed into a boat and starts moving on water. They can be used for military and rescue operations as well. Few vehicles run on bio fuels and a lot of research has been going on to make them more economical and useful.

1. WaterCar

WaterCar
WaterCar

The water car is built to provide uninterrupted amphibious transportation to the masses just like the Rinspeed sQuba or Splash. The creators of this amphibious car claim that it is the fastest amphibian car, which can reach a top speed of 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds in water. The heart of this car is a Corvette’s LS engine that powers this car and is faster than the bond inspired amphibious cars. This car is priced at $200,000.00 which when compared with the cost of a car, a trailer and a boat is an acceptable deal. This car is available in more than 60,000 exterior and 4,000 interior colors.

2. Humdinga

Humdinga

This is a 4X4 concept car created by the Kiwi entrepreneur Alan Gibbs. The Humdinga is a 5-seater amphibian SUV. It is powered by a V8 engine pumping out 350 bhp of power, which is capable of pushing this amphibian up to 160 kph on land and 65 kph on water. All that is required to transform from the land mode to the water mode is just the touch of a button. Wheels are retracted and the drive train switches to the jet propulsion system from the wheels and the SUV gets into the amphibian mode. To develop the HSA technology, it took its creators 7 years, more than a million man-hours, and millions of pounds of money. It accelerates to a speed of 100 kph in just 9.2 seconds on land and takes less than 10 seconds in water to reach to 65 kph. Its curb weight is 2000 kg and has an independent air suspension for every wheel.

3. Aquada

Aquada

The product is very handy and can be carried every single day. What makes POPI a great product is the handle it comes fitted with. This puts forward two major advantages in terms of usage. The amazing umbrella has a bigger handle that is comfortable and is responsible for a better grip. POPI can be stored and placed just anywhere without the fear that it is wet and will mess up the surroundings like it happens with everyday umbrellas.

Picture Gallery
POPI by Max Battaglia
Popi has the same size of a standard umbrella.

POPI by Max is easy to operate and comes sans any additional complications. Simply drag its top cap and pull the umbrella out of the handle, just like we do while using a standard umbrella. When not in use, fold it by pushing the umbrella back in the handle and close the top cap. The size of POPI is almost same as that of regular umbrellas present in the market, but the handle housing makes it a more acceptable and unique product.

POPI is a user friendly umbrella that can be easily stored in handbags and backpacks even when it is wet because of the presence of a hermetic seal. The design is simple and a user will get additional storage benefits. It will be a little expensive than a normal umbrella, which will be a very small cost that you will pay keeping in mind its usefulness.

Water Transport 2025 provides a ray of hope for Mumbai's population congestion

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 04:37 AM PST

Sahil Khurana:

Mumbai being one of the most densely populated cities of India needs to have a well connected transport system in place, catering to its population. Even though traveling is a major chore for the people, it has become almost necessary for everyone to commute by overcrowded trains.

Water Transport
Water Transport

Giving an alternate solution for the same, the Water Transport Mumbai 2025 concept has been designed. Water Transport Mumbai 2025 shall make use of the water bodies surrounding Mumbai, while main intention is to ferry people across from one side to the other. The concept is fairly simple, but then it's yet to see when it comes into play and provides a sense of relief to the daily commuters.

Picture Gallery
Water Transport
Water Transport Mumbai 2025 by Ajinkya Yadav

The idea incorporates a catamaran vessel into its concept. The vessel is a good 20 m long which is further powered by 120 solar panels. So not only is this transport vehicle going to relive the congestion of Mumbai, it will even provide an eco friendly edge to it. With a capacity to seat a good 150 people in one go, even the disabled and VIP people can have a go in this vessel.

Imagine what this kind of a vehicle would do for the suburbs of Mumbai. The twin decks of the boat would not only seat a lot of people, they would even provide a panoramic view to those seated above. The areas being covered by Water Transport Mumbai 2025 would be Borivali, Juhu, Bandra, Nariman Point, Chembur, Vashi and Panvel amongst some others. The crisscross locations of these points would ensure that the east and west coast of Mumbai are locally connected with each other, thanks to the facility to commute by water.

I'm sure the Government of India would be the happiest when it comes to launching and funding the Water Transport Mumbai 2025. Keeping in mind the kind of decongestion capabilities which would come to the fore, the idea of this transport vessel would be a great boon for Mumbai.

PET Tree Project recycles old water bottles into a vertical garden

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 04:30 AM PST

Asmita Prasad:

In a world increasingly threatened by freshwater shortages and environmental imbalances resulting in lack of rain and flooding, it has become paramount that we as a civilization pay more attention to the way we use water not only in the course of our daily lives but also in other activities like gardening. The Pet Tree project was created by the Hakan Gursu Foundation which uses the expertise of Turkish environmentalist and green-design innovator Dr. Hakan Gürsu. The project basically aims at allowing people to reuse their disposed PET bottles and reuse them to create a vertical garden in their backyards or terraces. The system uses 5 liter PET bottles as flower pots and planters to create a vertical garden or an alternative organic plantation growing system that uses drop watering to maximize water resources.

Pet-Tree
Pet-Tree

To form a multi-leveled geometrical setup as an alternative to regular, space-hogging planters, the PET Tree projects uses PET bottles sliced in half to serve as the main planter pots while the other half of the bottle is recycled and used to create other plastic components in the design. one mm thick stainless steel is used to craft the main support body of the system while the protective membrane is fashioned out of welded CA (cellulose acetate).

Picture Gallery
Pet-Tree
It aims of encouraging the use of waste 5 lt PET bottles.

The vertical pot arrangement allows the system to use an innovative irrigation cycle which can help keep many levels of pots and planters hydrated using a smaller amount of freshwater. By using a dripping system, all the PET planters can be irrigated using the same water which filters down to lower level, is collected at the bottom and then pumped to the top level again to be reused in the drip. This allows plants to optimally soak up all the nutrition in the soil that is otherwise wasted and helps gardeners extend their water sources and feed more plants using a little amount of water.

By extending a garden vertically instead of horizontally, the PET Tree system also allows users to make the most of the space available to them and the system thus allows people to transform their backyards, balconies, terraces and spare rooms into vertical farms that can be used to grow seasonal veggies and herbs. The system, when used on a larger scale, can be used to promote the production of organic groceries in cities short on space like New York, Hong Kong and Singapore which have to import a large part of their vegetables and herbs from other places. When incorporated on a larger scale, the PET Tree system would enable producers to reuse plastic PET bottles that would otherwise end up in landfills while maximizing their city's water resources and producing organic vegetables and herbs for sale in local markets.

Seven self-sufficient underwater structures

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 12:15 AM PST

Reeyankee Das Choudhury:

With the rise in sea level on account of climatic changes threatening coastal cities worldwide, need for underwater or floating architectures and cities is presently being felt more compared to ever before. Keeping in mind that water covers 71 percent of the surface of the Earth, which in the future is likely to augment because of environmental changes, underwater cities or skyscrapers enter the picture and provide ray of hope for sustaining life on earth. Underwater skyscrapers water oriented location, self-sustainability and volumetric attributes can serve humanity aptly in post-apocalyptic circumstances. Here is a list of 7 underwater structures that are self-sufficient:

Underwater structures
Underwater structures

1. Water-Scraper: Underwater Architecture

Water-Scraper
Water-Scraper

The water scraper functions as in the sea as self-sufficient ambassadors. It is an independent floating unit of functional, self sustaining and livable space that will function as floating city in collective manner. Being self sufficient, it produces its own power by means of wave, current, wind, bio, solar among others. It also produces its own food via farming, hydroponics and aquaculture. The Water-Scraper programme's main components comprises of resource generation, work, living, waste treatment, play and maintenance. The building has been kept upright with the help of balancing tanks and ballast system.

2. Gyre – A self-sufficient underwater tower to boost eco-tourism

Gyre
Gyre

Zigloo's Gyre is an abstract floating development designed in the form of an underwater skyscraper. It will collectively bring vacationers and scientists for understanding the ocean, that too devoid of polluting its subtle ecosystem. The development peeking at 400m depth will offer space for working environment and comfortable living including space for restaurants, shops, recreation and gardens. The unique design of the Gyre will allow integration of systems for harvesting renewable energy via sun, wind and tides. The Gyre will also generate solar energy through windows via glass printed range of solar cells.

3. Dubai's Blue Crystal Floating Iceburg lodge

Blue Crystal Floating
Blue Crystal Floating

Following Russia and Canada, Dubai too is getting its first ice lodge called Blue Crystal. With respect to the total energy required for keeping man made iceberg in scorching summers less than 32 degrees on Persian Gulf, the Blue Crystal hyped as sustainable is indeed amusing to hear. Dubai architectures growing trend seems being the creation of utmost in luxury yet of the improbable, impossible and downright outrageous. The arid desert climate in Dubai does not lend it easily to ice sculptures particularly luxury entertainment with 6 stories including underwater ballroom and lounge. The Blue Crystal has been claimed by German design duo Sven Sauer and Frank of harnessing the natural energy sources of the world thereby keeping them self-sufficient.

4. Great Pacific Garbage PatchUnderwater Skyscrapers

Great Pacific Garbage
Great Pacific Garbage

Water bodies and oceans on planet have off late turned dumping grounds as has been evidenced by Great Pacific Great Patch. Luckily an awakening is taking place with people becoming conscious of both the ecology and the environment. Underwater skyscraper will majestically float in water and collect all garbage it can locate. The lowest section of the tower will store the collected garbage and then send the garbage for recycling at middle portion.

5. Self-sufficient AQVA habitat

AQVA habitat
AQVA habitat

The AQVA habitat designed by Theodora Christoforidou and Abel Patacho is an exclusive structure which weaves a good relationship among upper environment and the underwater via water dynamics cycle. This habitat behaves like double structure machine designed to function as both space generator as well as water purification system for adjusting, characterizing and modifying an environment. Being energy-efficient, this habitat includes hexagonal components which combine together for creating an area of social interaction. The AQVA habitat is a space which is both aesthetically appealing and sustainable for urban living.

6. Sub-Biosphere 2: Self-sustainable underwater habitat

Sub-Biosphere 2
Sub-Biosphere 2

Phil Pauley, UK-based designer inspired by USA's Biosphere 2 project has designed a self-sustainable aquatic habitat called Sub-Biosphere 2. This underwater city comprises of 8 living biomes adjoining a big central biome that houses equipment to sustain all life support systems like air, water, electricity, food and other resources by means of innovative control of alternative atmospheric pressure on all depths including ocean floor.

7. Self-sufficient Undersea Scraper harmonizes with nature

Undersea Scraper
Undersea Scraper

Spanish architects Ifigeneia Arvaniti and Higinio Llames have come up with an autonomous underwater tower called Undersea Scraper. This habitat understands the necessity to live in harmony along with nature in sustainable ways. This self-sufficient tower produces energy from renewable sources for interacting with surroundings for generating tidal power. The top dome produces renewable energy by means of wind turbines and onboard photovoltaic generators. This tower has been designed for submerging or floating by means of its double skin which acts as ballast tank, to control the weight by allowing air as well as water out.
