Rescue Wizard: A brilliant machine for quick and easy rescue of wreckage victims

Posted: 27 Mar 2012 07:01 AM PDT

Radhicka S Saxena:

This simple design is more efficient and so much more powerful than its previous counterparts. It is a rescue device to save victims of a natural calamity like earthquakes, floods, tsunamis and tornadoes. In the event of such a disaster, many victims get caught in rubble or debris created by the wreckage ensuing on a massive scale. Although many devices are used to rescue victims, this one has been improvised considerably.

A heavy duty design for portable power

The gadget essentially contains a two stroke chainsaw and holds a 12 strand ultra high molecular weight polyethylene cable. The new version has been modified and thus operates more proficiently. Firstly, it moves more speedily and can withstand a greater amount of force. Additionally, it allows operations to be ceased while the rescue is going on, which is really helpful when an extremely heavy load is being pulled. Another huge plus with the inbuilt cable is that it does not conduct electricity or store kinetic energy while it is in operation. This increases safety of the whole process as additional accidents during the rescue operations can be avoided.

Carrying out the rescue operation will also be easier with this cable. Though it weighs less than 100 pounds, one person will be able to lug a heavy load single handedly with the pulley. A load equivalent to the weight of two SUVs can be easily hauled using this machine. Hence, due to the immense power even a single person can easily rescue many people at a time, which is quite a boon. This very useful device will easily find other applications apart from rescue operations. It will come handy in the adventure sports industry too.

Armchair without Prejudice comes with a hidden coffee table and footrest

Posted: 27 Mar 2012 06:59 AM PDT

Asmita Prasad:

Armchair without Prejudice is the latest project by Valencian design studio Sanserif Creatius and looks to raise awareness about sustainable production processes and the quality of cardboard used in such endeavors. The campaign is devoted to promoting green furniture designs for the future for which a commitment to recycling is needed along with general awareness about the importance of sustainable growth of resources used in household furniture.

Armchair Without Prejudice

The Armchair without Prejudice is an innovative set of furniture that features a seat with a hidden coffee table and footrest inside. Through the design, its creators hope to raise awareness about the potential of cardboard as the staple material used in the production of household furniture for future homes.

The set of seats can be used together or independently with the complementary units being used as a coffee table, a footrest or even a small low stool to sit on. Manufactured through a sustainable production process, the unit is crafted in a 100 percent recycled cardboard and allows users to set them in versatile seating configurations. The pleasing contours of the seating set are complemented by the natural beauty of the unblemished recycled cardboard that provides the seating with a soft yet sturdy texture that is gentle to the touch.

AN ARMCHAIR WITHOUT PREJUDICE THAT HIDES A FOOTREST AND A COFFEE TABLE

Though cardboard furniture is more prone to staining and can be damaged easily, it is much easier to move which makes it the perfect bit of furniture for people who like to try out new layouts for their homes or those who shift homes frequently. The Prejudice line of seating was created by Sanserif Creatius in collaboration with Apai Foundation, a Special Employment Center that promotes marginalized socio-labor groups, and the Association of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (AFCO).

The limited edition furniture collection is created to serve multiple purposes around the house and can be evolved and adapted to various household purposes as well. The set can thus be adapted to serve as a standalone library, an end table, a night stand as well as a support table accenting other furniture in a room.

The Prejudice was also so named to try and focus attention on the fact that paper and cardboard based furniture are stigmatized as low quality, non-durable and "disposable." However, this particular project looks to destigmatize paper and cardboard furniture and looks to promote it as an environmentally friendly and low-impact furniture option that is produced with a relatively clean production process in comparison to furniture made of wood, metal or plastics.

Asmita Prasad:

Versatile furniture has been much in demand pretty much since the 60’s though the market for such products has really taken off in the last decade. The sleek and minimalist lightWake by designer Daniel Chow is one such multipurpose bit of furniture that doubles up as a futuristic alarm clock for the modern young professional as well. The elegant nightstand comes with a touch enabled table top that serves as an interface for the alarm clock.

To activate the alarm, a user needs to swipe their hand across the face of the table. The table's surface is thus illuminated and the alarm clock interface is presented to the user. Three capacitive touch "buttons" appear on the projected interface of the clock once the alarm interface has been activated. An up arrow, a down arrow and a power button allow users to set the desired alarm time. Half an hour before the alarm is supposed to go off, lightWake starts to gradually illuminate the room with a gentle light.

As the alarm time approaches, the table too gains full brightness level and begins to sound the alarm with a gentle chiming sound. This allows the user to be waked gently instead of being awoken by a sudden harsh alarm sound. To turn the alarm off, the user has to activate the interface of the table top, unlock it with a swipe across the table and push the power button to turn the alarm off.

Avante Video Recorder helps ballerinas improve their steps

Posted: 27 Mar 2012 06:49 AM PDT

Asmita Prasad:

Created by Betty Huang, the Avante Video Recorder for Ballet Dancers is a great new tool that can help ballerinas practice and improve themselves even when instructors aren't present. The tool is developed to encourage ballerinas to be able to share their techniques and help others learn instead of competing with each other all the time. Since stress and injury resulting from improper posture during practice is one of the biggest challenges faced by ballet dancers, the Avante video recorder can be used as a teaching tool that can help prevent injuries among dancers.

Avante,a video recorder for ballet dancers by Betty Huang

Avante used a set of strap on inertial sensors that are fitted at the arms, legs and torso of a dancer. The camera unit is then mounted to a mirror or wall at eye level. This allows the camera to read sensor locations and body movement easily and accurately. As the camera starts recording, a ring around the lens lights up to indicate recording status. When the dancer is done with recording, they can also play the video back on the Avante.

During video playback, the sensors can recognize specific movements and highlight mistakes on the screen. This allows instructors to highlight incorrect postures and movements and help prevent injury from improper movements. The twin screens of the Avante allow viewers to directly compare a dancer’s movements to an instructor’s or a tutorial. The 3D sensors can identify foundational errors involving multiple limbs or weight distribution, which allows dancers to judge their own mistakes more accurately.

Oasis Refrigerator to provide drinkable water via an integrated filter system

Posted: 27 Mar 2012 06:46 AM PDT

Jaspreet Kaur Walia:

Aileen Dominguez has designed the Oasis Refrigerator for Electrolux, which doubles as a water filter as well. Clean water is precious, but most of the houses in Philippines don't have access to clean and safe drinking water, which forces people to either buy filtered water or use counter top/pitcher filters. This wastes a lot of time as well as energy when water has to be filled in these equipments from time to time.

Oasis Refrigerator will solve the problem of clean water and will also save time as well as money that is invested in counter top/pitcher filters. The automated water-filter integrated system in the form of Oasis will provide consumable water and also store food like a normal refrigerator. Cold and hot water is dispensed from the water dispenser that works using a sensor operated flow system. Oasis can be connected to any household water source, which accounts for a direct flow of drinkable water.

An LCD monitor has been fitted on the face of the refrigerator that flashes information like temperature, water filter facts and expiry date of products placed inside it. The design also comprises of a chiller that will provide chilled wine bottles as well as other beverages and also chilled glasses. A wine rack has been crafted from clear acrylic, which can easily hold five bottles. The sliding door of the Oasis Refrigerator helps save space, while the rotating rack makes grabbing items inside quite easy.

Oasis Refrigerator will save time wasted to refill filters every morning and evening. Also, the need to purchase clean water from water station takes a backseat.

Aqua Station cleanses fire hydrant water for post emergency use

Posted: 27 Mar 2012 06:44 AM PDT

Asmita Prasad:

Created by designer Zhang Xi, He Siqian, Kang Yuan and Xia Chenxi, the Aqua Station post emergency water delivery system seeks to provide a solution to the problem of shortage of drinking water in case an emergency strikes an inhabited area. When a major natural disaster has struck an area or is about to strike an area, people are generally advised to leave their homes and move into shelters set up by the government agencies.

Even though this is the best possible way to ensure that a large part of the population remains unharmed by a disaster, it can often contribute to the spread of diseases among shelter seekers as they are forced to drink whatever water is available at the shelter. The Aqua Station looks to provide a safe alternative to drinking unfiltered tap water at such locations. The system basically filters and cleanses water from fire hydrants hence tapping into a non-regular source of water supply and cleansing it for public consumption.

The Aqua Station is fitted with three taps that can be used to dispense herbal medicine, clean drinking water as well as hand sanitizer to ensure that shelter seekers do not fall prey to infections. When one of the vessels is being filled, another can be placed securely on top via an expanded outlet pipe with a flattened top surface.

Infiniti Interactive Mirrors make ordinary showroom displays look Paleolithic

Posted: 27 Mar 2012 06:43 AM PDT

Asmita Prasad:

Created for automaker Infiniti's booth at the Detroit Auto Show, the Infiniti Interactive Mirrors is a system of unique interactive mirror displays. The project was developed and designed by Nikolai Cornell in collaboration with Phil van Allen, The Designory, Mindflood, and George P. Johnson. Placed side by side, three mirrored glass panes measuring 8 feet tall by 3.5 feet wide with a high-lumen projector projecting content at the rear of each panel that is displayed to the user looking at themselves in the mirror from the front.

Infiniti Interactive Mirrors

This creates a unique sensation for the user who sees his own reflection in the mirror simultaneously with projected images. Each comes with embedded sensors at the top that can sense when a user is reaching out to touch a particular spot on the mirror. This provides the user with the sensation of interacting with a giant touch screen. As a user approaches the mirror, an additional sensor triggers a welcome screen and a three dimensional spatial content is projected in front of the viewer.

The user thus finds himself more immersed in the display that he is interacting with. The Infiniti Interactive Mirrors can be used to display a range of dynamic and still photographic images as well as motion graphics and flash animation. For the Infiniti brand, it provided a seamless and almost surreal way to promote the look and feel of their vehicles though the system can just as easily be used in other applications as well.
