LG giving out the LU2700S Braille Mobiles for free

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 06:17 AM PDT

Radhicka S Saxena:

This is truly a very compassionate design and certainly one with a definitive cause. The LG LU2700S phone launched recently is otherwise quite an ordinary handset, if it did not have these special set of features. The mobile can help out blind people. The phone's controls can be managed via a voice command system.

Hence, there will be no need to look at the screen and punch in the numbers. One has to simply utter out loud what they need to do and the phone will automatically implement the task for you. Blind people will be able to make calls and send text messages using simple voice commands. In fact, they can also listen to music on the MP3 player and click snaps by giving out oral commands.

Moreover, blind people will not need anyone's help to learn how the phone functions. The manual of the LG LU2700S model is printed in braille. So, they can read and understand themselves how to operate the phone. Adding to the empathetic design of the phone is a benevolent gesture by LG to give out quite a few of these handsets for free. The company is not planning to sell these phones right now but will be donating them to people who are in need of such electronic appliances. About 200 of these handsets will be given out gratis by LG.

DIY Sand Chair brings simplicity and minimalism to beach chairs

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 04:42 AM PDT

Asmita Prasad:

If you're handy with a few basic tools and happen to have a few broomsticks, a rag and a spare towel handy, you can fashion your own beach chair instead of splurging on something clunky that is a headache trying to fit at the back of your family SUV. Created by designer Tom De Vrieze, this DIY beach chair is called the Sand Chair and its maker claims that almost anyone can make it at home. The eco friendly chair is an open source design that allows people to make occasional use furniture like a beach chair which is better and more comfortable than most such items found at stores.

Super Simple DIY Beach Chair Is Made from a Towel and Broomsticks

Since the chair does not involve the use of any metal which makes it just perfect for people who hate having to deal with rusting chairs stocked away in their garages for a better part of the year. To make the chair, you simply have to sew four lengths of a rag or fabric at the back of the towel to create the basic support structure. Next you have to simply insert the broomsticks into these sewn off lengths in the given manner and stick them into the sand. The chair probably won't allow you the same level of sturdiness that a metal, nuts and bolts structure can but then again, unless you live at the beach, you probably won't need all that support when you're only going to use a chair for a few hours at a time.

The DIY chair is also super easy to maintain and clean since you just have to remove the sticks and throw the towel in the washing machine and in case a stick breaks you can simply substitute it with another piece of the same length from an inexpensive broomstick.

ShelfX is a smart fridge that doubles as a vending machine for public zones

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 04:22 AM PDT

Radhicka S Saxena:

A smart fridge, a little bit like the vending machines in your offices, can hoard loads of other goodies for you apart from M&M's, cookies and sodas. The intelligent fridge applies RFID technology and QR codes for its working and eliminates the need to have personnel around every time you make a purchase. People who have a user account with a QR code can easily use this fridge. You just have to scan an RFID card or iPhone app and the fridge will detect your unique QR code.

ShelfX Vending Fridge
ShelfX Vending Fridge

After the fridge recognizes your user account, it will unlock. Now you can rummage around for the grub you want. Feel free to move stuff from its original place as you won't be disturbing any electronic settings of the refrigerator in doing so. The fridge will store stuff like sandwiches, fruit, milk, sodas and other refreshments inside. Take whatever you want and close the door. The fridge will now charge you based on how many items are missing, i.e. the stuff you procured from inside.

The payment will get processed automatically from your account. Apart from selling stuff to you, the intelligent gadget also keeps track of the stock. It will send out monthly payments to shop owners after keeping a percentage of the proceeds generated for itself. The design also minimizes risk of theft as you have to know your way around RFID and electronic apps to steal from it. There are tech savvy thieves out there but their numbers are far lesser than the routine crooks who grab at things from open shelf displays and make a getaway.

This is a handy gadget for offices, theaters, hotel rooms, malls and supermarkets. People who often crave a midnight snack will love this piece. So if you're working late in your hostel, dorm room or office then food will be available even after the canteen closes. You can also use this fridge in kiosks by the street, public pavements, airport lounges and railway stations. It will be a useful addition to airplanes, trains and ships also. You can order the piece for $599 or outfit an older fridge with the RFID function for $299.

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 02:36 AM PDT

Asmita Prasad:

Furniture design in the 21st century is all about customizing the experience of winding down after a long day to the hobbies and needs of individual users. Most urban users these days have a handful of activities that they find relaxing though they often need a lot of space to store their music players, gaming consoles, TV sets, etc. and often need separate chairs to sit on while they use these different means of entertainment. The Pod by designer Josh Snodgrass is one such lounger that tries to ensure that everything an average user needs to wind down after a long day is found within one comfortable nest-like space.

The Pod: A chair for relaxation and entertainment

The demand for spaces that provide seclusion from one's normal living space and allow one to "escape" the routine of daily life have been on the rise of late and we find many such furniture concepts mushrooming all over the place. The Pod too is one such variation of the secluding lounge chair segment that plays with the concept of providing a personal space dedicated to the enjoyment of one's hobbies like listening to music, watching movies and TV programs, listening to the radio, playing video games or even simply lounging with a book in a cradling space. The spherical pod is hollowed out inside with a "roof" overhead and "windows" on either side which allows it to be placed indoors near a balcony or even out in the yard, garden or deck without losing its functionality in any weather.

The Pod is basically designed to provide an optimum lounging experience to the user which is why it comes fitted with a chaise lounge made up of 20 cylindrical cushions that cradle the user's body in an ergonomic position. Inside, The Pod comes laced with an audio system fitted with 8 speakers, a flat screen TV and a shelf for storing a gaming console which makes it the perfect all-in-one gaming and entertainment space.

Magic Bullet: A harmless yet effective remedy for troublemakers

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 02:35 AM PDT

Lovnish Thakur:

U.S army has come up with an innovative find. A magic bullet that hovers around the target, hangs out in midair but won’t kill. This find can act as a perfect fit for the army to deal with law and order problems where the target is to stop troublemakers from destroying public property.

Magic Bullet
Magic Bullet

Combination of previous technologies

The U.S army has worked upon its previous technology namely Lethal Miniature Aerial Munition System (LMAMS). The magic bullet has been designed to hit a human target in twenty seconds and flies about 100 meters above the ground level.

In case the present innovation falls short of expectations the army is planning to conduct further research that will make the magic bullet hover around the target for over thirty minutes before pinning them down.

Efforts are also being made to add a non lethal warhead to the magic bullet, since the main purpose of the bullet is to intimidate trouble creators and not to harm them physically. The army is though tight lipped on the kind of non lethal options they are considering for the magic bullet. The use of heat ray has been ruled out as the power required for heat ray to become active is beyond the range of any such non lethal powerhead as of now.

Still in its infancy

The system is still in its infancy and range of options are being considered to make it fully operational. With U.S troops deployed in a range of trouble creating spots including Afghanistan, an early initiation of this technology can bring relief to the army. Switchblade drone is a perfect example of LMAMS technology that would allow soldiers to direct a missile towards the enemy through a laptop.

More work is needed to make the LMAMS technology truly non lethal and security experts in United States have been working on a range of options to make it a viable alternative to the bullet.

New York based hotel has a striking exterior bearing portholes

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 02:06 AM PDT

Radhicka S Saxena:

This quirky hotel in New York is sure to make a lot of heads turn. The very industrial design has a futuristic vibe and looks absolutely stupendous. The feature that stands out the most are the porthole windows on the facade of the building, which remind you a little bit of the children's game called Connect Four. The entire building along with the exteriors and interiors are designed by an American firm called Handel architects.

Dream Downtown Hotel
Dream Downtown Hotel

This is an 184,000 SF boutique hotel of 12 stories that has 316 guestrooms. Juliet balconies have been created at the circular openings for the guests rooms. There is ample of lounging space like two restaurants, retail space of the ground level, event zone and also a gym. Its rooftop and VIP lounges are marvelous. Take a dip in the outdoor pool or loll about the pool bar. Located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, this structure is rightly dubbed as the Dream Downtown Hotel.

The light effect employed inside is tantalizing. The hotel has been made such that light bounces off its surfaces smoothly. When light rays hit the facade, the circular windows appear like bubbles and stainless steel elements disintegrate. The tiles reflect the light from the sun, moon and sky. Hand blown glass globes that dangle from the ceiling illuminate the interiors with what looks like a magical cloud like lighting. There are about two hundred such globes located in the Marble Lane restaurant and lobby.

The building has many marvelous details that will leave you completely enthralled. The space on the inside flows freely and looks quite striking. The orthogonal patterns fold at the corner and continue into the slope. The porthole windows, that hold a sloping exterior of steel tiles, create am ambiance of controlled chaos. The smaller of the two blocks has an overlapping layer of perforated metal.
