OmniPod Insulin Management System: Makes living easier with diabetes

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 06:16 AM PST

Asmita Prasad:

More than 24 million people have been affected by diabetes in the United States alone. Most people, on being diagnosed, either opt to learn how to use an infusion pump or have to use multiple daily insulin injections to deal with the ailment. The daily injections are a painful and old tech way to cope with diabetes and pumps are difficult to master.

A tiny, wearable insulin pump that attaches directly to the user's skin with a self-adhesive backing.

However, neither of these methods are suitable for people who need to stay active through the day and may not have the time to sit down and take their injections at specified times and do not want to flaunt their illness via the bulky pumps either. The OmniPod Insulin Management System developed by Insulet in partnership with Continuum provides diabetics with an easy solution to their woes.

Fitted with a self adhesive backing that attaches directly to the user's skin, the device comprises of a miniscule, wearable insulin pump. This makes the tubing of bulkier pumps redundant and allows users a fuller range of motion as well. Depending on the user's individual needs, OmniPod injects the wearer with a preset dosage of insulin at regular intervals automatically.

Thanks to a virtually painless automatic cannula insertion process, the OmniPod frees users from the pain of being injected with insulin. The easiest-to-use and smallest pump in the market today, OmniPod has been honored with multiple awards like the Edison Innovation award, the IDEA/Business Week Gold award and the MDEA award.

Wheelchair: Mobility Independent Concept for the physically challenged

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 05:55 AM PST

Jaspreet Kaur Walia:

There are a range of vehicles present in the market, but only a few understand the special needs of wheelchair users. It becomes difficult for people using a wheelchair to get in and out of car. They have to be lifted all the time, which can get tiring and prove to be a real task. Keeping all these troubles in mind, LeJuan Richardson has conceptualized a specialty vehicle named Wheelchair - Mobility Independent Concept.

The industrial designer understood the critical needs of wheelchair users and came up with a practical design. Wheelchair Mobility concept has a functional platform DNA, which will make entry and exit an easy task. It will unfurl a variety of loading options, which are absent in everyday vehicles. This will prove to be a blessing for physically challenged people and also for those who can't get around without a wheelchair. The inside does not have seats and the empty space can be used to position wheelchairs directly. This means that folding the wheelchair takes a backseat, which is quite impressive.

The concept looks like a normal van at first sight, but has been injected with a wide range of useful features. The platforms can be extended from all the four sides of the vehicle and can be placed in different positions. This will delete the need of lifting the disabled, as one can easily push the wheelchair inside the car from all the four sides including the front. The awe-amazing specialty vehicle has a lot of storage space as well, which is in the form of large boxes or drawers. These boxes have been place in a way that will not limit the use of the functional platforms.

Wheelchair Mobility concept puts together a lot of loading options which are otherwise unavailable in other vehicles. This will make moving around pleasant and easy for physically challenged people.

O personal mobility solution repurposes old Italian railway tracks

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 04:17 AM PST

Asmita Prasad:

Created by Italian designer, Davide Bonanni, O is not your average run of the mill personal mobility vehicle. The vehicle proposes to reuse and repurpose old Italian railway tracks that have been discarded and decommissioned and are left rotting in scrap yards. Some of these old railway tracks are currently being used as the bicycle lanes after being filled with concrete casting though several hundreds of kilometers of abandoned rail are still littered through the entire Italian territory.

In order to avoid excessive costs of materials “O” wants to be a middle ground between the road and rail.

To ensure that an important piece of the nation's industrial history doesn't go waste and a valuable and costly resource is not squandered, the designer proposes that the bits of rail be incorporated within the design of the futuristic personal mobility solution.

The design and functionality of O stands right in between that of vehicle made for the road and the ones designed to be run on rail. The O, thus, not only innovates in terms of design but also in terms of repurposing existing scraps toward the construction of vehicles for the future.

The single-seater vehicle allows commuters to travel both on the road and on rails, which gives it a certain advantage as a mobility solution for narrow bylanes of towns which can use the vehicle to streamline the traffic in jam-prone areas. The spherical cabin of the vehicle is also crafted from transparent materials, which offer an innovative panoramic view and makes the vehicle perfect for use in the tourism industry.

Arvind Sundararaman:

Electric bicycles have certainly not earned a good amount of respect from the pure cycling enthusiasts. Despite its several advantages, which include providing extra power while climbing a hill or while carrying load, their heavy setup including the motors and batteries comes as a big turn off for many. Since these electric bikes don’t come cheap either, cyclist always find it better to shy away from these e-bikes.

Ridekick gives a power boost to standard non-motorized bicycles

RideKick has come with a simple solution to these problems by launching their product called the RideKick power trailer. This motorized trailer can be attached to a bicycle as and when required, thereby removing the necessity of carrying the motors and battery pack every time one goes out. Powered by a 24V lead acid battery, the 500 watt electric motor pushes the bicycle to speed of up to 19mph. For a single charge, that takes just four to six hours, RideKick provides an overall range of 12 miles. Once the trailer is hooked on to the bicycle, the speed can be controlled through a customized throttle that is mounted on the handle bar.

The trailer, provided with a closing lid and an in-built combination lock, can safely carry a maximum of 42 liters of your cargo. Best part of all is that it just takes 12 minutes to install the RideKick power trailer to a bicycle.

So, you have a bike which you could transform to an electric bike with a trailer at your will. You can connect the trailer only when you have a good amount of stuff to carry and you don’t want to sweat it out to pedal your way the whole distance. Not only would the electric motor of the RideKick kick in, but you would also have an ample amount of space to carry your stuff. RideKick is priced at $699 and can be purchased at its official website.

Sahil Khurana:

Men and machines share a long relationship, right from time immemorial. The influence of this concept is so strong; it has even been reflected in some of the famous Hollywood movies, the recent one being the Transformer’s series.

Old Russian Car transformed into a Powerful Man-Machine Sculpture

Giving a new lease on life and exploring a new dimension of art, the half man, half machine creation by the Netherland's company, Studio Re-Creation is as unique as its existence. Reviving the Transformer’s magic, they have built a brand new machine model out of an old recycled Lada Samara Diva car. By making use of the car's worthless parts, the studio has been able to recreate a lifelike metallic robot. A true example of how a bit of revamping and tweaking can lead to an enormous effect on the environment in the form of recycling.

The robot stands tall at a height of 6.5 feet and has been proudly displayed in the studio's head office in the Netherlands. The 200 pound structure makes use of the old Russian car and exemplifies the effect of recycling and artistic restructuring. Each and every contour of the metallic model oozes out the designer’s creativity and reminds the onlookers of the effort involved in the building process.

A pat on the back for the designer, who has sculpted, welded and crafted the complete model by hand. The mechanized beauty would have ended up in trash if the designer would not have stepped in and refurbished the whole concept of recycling. All in all, a true epitome of reusing our precious resources. A grand salute to Studio Re-Creation for giving birth to such a fantabulous masterpiece.
